The new cutting-edge automated drilling technology - Rotary Steering System (RSS) - independently developed by Daqing Drilling Engineering and Technology Research Institute of Drilling has successfully carried out field tests on 23 wells. The technology can control the direction of downhole drilling in real time, travel freely through the oil layer thousands of meters underground, and accurately hit the oil reservoir.


Rotary Steering System (RSS) is a cutting-edge automated drilling new technology, representing the highest level of drilling technology development in today's world, and has gradually become a necessary technology for the use of complex ultra-deep directional wells and large-displacement horizontal wells.


Pei Fei, the person in charge of the self-developed rotary guide project of Daqing Drilling Engineering Technology Research Institute, introduced that the system has the feature of rotating while sliding, which is capable of judging the position of the reservoir as early as possible during the drilling construction process and precisely controlling the trajectory of the borehole, so that the trajectory can be adjusted along with the direction of the development of the reservoir. Compared with the use of conventional motor drilling tools, the rotary guidance has a more precise ability to control the trajectory of the borehole, forming a smoother borehole, which can effectively reduce the friction torque and the occurrence of downhole complexities, and at the same time, it can also significantly increase the length of the horizontal section and improve the development efficiency of a single well.


This academy has vigorously carried out technical research and successfully developed the rotary guidance system, and achieved seven major innovations in power supply, communication, control, and electromechanical-hydraulic integration. Among them, high-power mud power generation and three-phase full-bridge pulse width controllable power supply technology, so that the power supply module in different mud flow rate can be a stable output of 300W of power; energy, signal non-contact two-way high-efficiency wireless transmission technology, realizing the relative high-speed rotary movement between the carrier of the energy of the high-efficiency wireless transmission and bi-directional signal communication; innovative design of the instruction of the mud negative pulse downstream transmission, processing and receiving technology to achieve a Innovative design of negative pulse transmission, processing and receiving technology of command mud, which realizes the accurate reduction of control command figures; Full closed-loop real-time vector calculation model of guiding force, which greatly improves the adaptability and stability of the rotary guidance system in the downhole work;

Up to now, this technology has a total field test footage of 6,332 meters, a cumulative working time of 983 hours, a maximum inclination rate of 6.5 degrees per 30 meters, a maximum horizontal section footage of 841 meters in a single well, a sandstone drilling encounter rate of up to 86.4%, and an average mechanical drilling speed of 129.49% higher than that of the LWD construction in the same block, which has laid the foundation for the industrialization and promotion of this technology.
